Roasting the beans is the whole difference. Black castor oil is pressed from castor seeds that were roasted first, and the ash from that roast ends up in the oil, which darkens the color and raises the pH. Cold-pressed castor oil skips the roast and stays pale yellow.
Past that, the two are close to identical. Both run roughly 85 to 90 percent ricinoleic acid on manufacturer and reference figures, and that one fatty acid is why castor oil feels thick and tacky, slow to spread across a scalp.
What the roast does to the oil
The traditional Jamaican method roasts the seeds, pounds them into a mash, then boils it so the oil rises and gets skimmed off. The ash from roasting rides along with it.
That ash is why the oil looks dark brown to near black and carries a faintly burnt smell. It is not proof of added nutrients. High heat is hard on the minor components of any seed oil, tocopherols included, so the roast reads as a trade rather than an upgrade.
The pH claim, examined
Ash makes black castor oil more alkaline than the cold-pressed version. Sellers turn that into a selling point: higher pH opens the cuticle so the oil can get inside.
Read it the other way. Raised pH swells and lifts the cuticle, which is the thing you work to avoid on bleached, relaxed or high-porosity hair, because a lifted cuticle loses water and snags against itself.

Who black castor oil suits
Coarse, low-porosity, tightly coiled hair that tolerates heavy sealing tends to get along with it. Same for anyone who wants a pre-wash oil thick enough to stay where it was put instead of running to the ends.
Scalp comfort is the more defensible reason to reach for it. Ricinoleic acid has been studied in laboratory models for anti-inflammatory behavior, which is a long way from a proven scalp treatment, though it does line up with why people use it on itchy, flaky patches.
When to pick something lighter
Fine hair, low density and freshly colored hair are the obvious cases. This oil is tacky enough to leave fine strands looking coated after a single application, and getting it out takes real surfactant rather than a co-wash.
Drop the regrowth promise from your reasoning altogether. No controlled trial shows castor oil of either type regrowing hair, and dermatology case reports have linked castor oil use to hair felting, a matted tangle that usually ends in cutting. Your oiling frequency does more for your scalp than the version in the bottle, which is the argument in how often you oil your scalp.
