Cold-pressed oils are carrier oils that keep the fatty acids, vitamin E, and antioxidants your hair and scalp actually use. Steam-distilled oils are essential oils, concentrated aromatics with almost none of those nourishing fats.
So for scalp and strand care, cold-pressed carrier oils do the conditioning work, and steam-distilled essential oils get added in tiny amounts for scent and active compounds.
What cold pressing actually preserves
Cold pressing squeezes oil from seeds or nuts using mechanical pressure and little to no heat. Staying under roughly 120 degrees Fahrenheit protects the heat-sensitive nutrients that degrade when oils get hot.

What steam distillation is built for
Steam distillation runs hot vapor through plant material to pull out volatile aromatic compounds. The result is an essential oil like rosemary, peppermint, or lavender, not a carrier.
These oils are potent and keep well, but they carry very little of the conditioning fat your hair wants. You use them by the drop, blended into a carrier base.
How to use each one on your hair
Make cold-pressed carrier oils the bulk of any blend, then add a small amount of a steam-distilled essential oil for a targeted benefit. Keep essential oils under 2 percent of the total.
