Shea Moisture Shampoo: Which Formula Fits Which Hair and Scalp

Shea Moisture Shampoo: Which Formula Fits Which Hair and Scalp

Choose a SheaMoisture shampoo by what your scalp and strands need, because the shea butter in the name tells you very little. SheaMoisture’s US shampoo page returns 13 formulas, and the product names map to specific jobs: scalp moisture, dandruff, low porosity, high porosity, and damaged hair.

The table below uses only what the brand’s own product pages say. Our Shea Moisture review covers the wider range; this guide stays on shampoo.

Dry, tight or itchy scalp

Start with the Aloe Butter Scalp Moisture shampoo if your scalp feels tight between washes. The brand pairs it with a matching conditioner and says it removes buildup without stripping moisture.

Visible flakes with itching are a different problem. The Apple Cider Vinegar formula is the only shampoo in this list with a drug active, and its page says to use it at least twice a week or as directed by a doctor.

Its ingredient list names an olefin sulfonate cleanser, and the page makes no sulfate-free claim.

Low porosity or high porosity strands

The two porosity shampoos are the most literal products in the range. Low Porosity is the lightweight clarifier for hair that resists moisture; High Porosity is the richer one for dry, damaged strands.

The video below talks through which SheaMoisture lines suit which porosity.

Damaged or chemically processed hair

The Jamaican Black Castor Oil shampoo targets relaxed and color-treated hair. Its list also includes hydrolyzed rice protein, hydrolyzed wheat protein and hydrolyzed keratin, which matters if your hair reacts badly to protein.

Castor sits tenth, after the shea butter in ninth, so treat it as a supporting ingredient.

Who should skip the heavier butters

Fine hair and roots that look greasy within a day do not need a butter-led shampoo. If that is you, read oil-control shampoos and when oiling is the wrong answer before buying anything with shea in the name.

Also keep expectations realistic. A shampoo rinses off, and our look at shea butter shampoo and conditioner explains why the conditioner is where shea does its work.

Questions readers ask

Which SheaMoisture shampoo is best for dry hair?

The brand points to its High Porosity Moisture Replenish shampoo for dry and damaged strands and to Aloe Butter Scalp Moisture for a dry scalp. Match the formula to where the dryness sits, scalp or lengths.

Is SheaMoisture shampoo sulfate-free?

Not across the board. The brand's pages describe the Jamaican Black Castor Oil and Virgin Coconut Oil shampoos as sulfate-free, while the Apple Cider Vinegar Anti-Dandruff shampoo lists sodium C14-16 olefin sulfonate as a cleanser. Read the page for each formula.

Can I use SheaMoisture dandruff shampoo every day?

The brand's page says to use the Anti-Dandruff shampoo at least twice a week or as directed by a doctor. It contains 1.0% pyrithione zinc as the active, so follow the label and ask a doctor if flaking persists.
